October is upon us and it’s time to celebrate the immense contribution of school libraries in our communities. The international community through the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) has dedicated the entire month of October as the International School Library Month (ISLM).

The theme for 2018 is “Why I Love My School Library" which is derived from the annual IASL conference theme of “Innovation, Information and Impact of School Libraries". IASL expect stakeholders to hold various activities in school libraries to appreciate school libraries and librarians.

IASL stated on their website that, “This year we [IASL] are focusing on the impact of school libraries and we have chosen a theme wording that we believe will be accessible to all our participants (aged 3 to 20 years)”. The ISLM Chairperson, Breege O’Brien said that, “We are inviting them to celebrate ISLM 2018 by engaging in projects and activities to express why they love their school library.”

Zimbabwe is amongst the nations that are commemorating the ISLM through various activities, the IASL Region 1 comprising nations in Africa Sub Sahara, has organized a school librarian’s seminar for the relevant stakeholders to be held at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) on October 19. According to the event notice posted on Eventbrite.com the event will allow participants to collaborate, network and share ideas towards enriching school libraries. An open event will be held on October 18 at the NUST campus inviting all stakeholders to participant in the ISLM commemorations. The programme is an effort to raise awareness and lobby stakeholders to develop school librarians through various messaging surrounding the theme “Why I Love My School Library". IASL Region 1 Regional Director, Jerry Mathema is expected to attend the event to express his love for the school library.

In Mutare, at the Chancellor Junior School, Ms. Pretty Dube, a librarian at Mutare Polytechnic, is working with the school authorities to host ISLM activities following successful efforts to have the school establish a vibrant school library.

In Harare, ZimLibrary has organized school library activities in Ruwa to recognize the great work school libraries they are collaborating with on reading initiatives are doing. Events are expected to create awareness on the significance of school libraries.
