Mr. Jerry Mathema the current Zimbabwe Library Association Matebeleland Branch Chairperson was appointed the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Regional Director for Africa Sub-Sahara region effective 21 July 2015. The region covers Botswana, Congo, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Mr. Mathema becomes the first Zimbabwean to take the leadership post that has so many responsibilities which include publicising the work of IASL in the region through membership drives, and sale of publications among other activities. The position also allow Mr. Mathema to work closely with various library related associations and institutions in promoting school librarianship within the region.
Mr. Mathema is a School Library Media Specialist at the Masiyephambili College in Bulawayo and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Library & Information Science (NUST), Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies (ZOU), Higher National Diploma in Library & Information Science (Bulawayo Polytechnic) and a Diploma in Educational Psychology (Alison, Ireland). He is also a recipient of the 2008 IASL Ken Haycock Leadership Award for developing school libraries, training school librarians and developing a library association.
The passion for school libraries evident in Mr. Mathema has culminated into various activities organised to commemorate the International School Library Month.
Mr. Mathema is also involved in the work of the Matabeleland Reading Awareness Campaign and Zimbabwe Library Development Trust (UK) Matabeleland Representative among a host of responsibilities.
